Manchester United defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Old Trafford, extending Michael Carrick’s winning start in the Premier League to four matches. Cristian Romero’s dismissal for a challenge on Casemiro in the 29th minute left the visitors with ten players.

Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring nine minutes later after a carefully worked corner involving Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo. United continued to threaten after the interval, although efforts by Amad and Matheus Cunha were disallowed before Fernandes finished at the back post.

Fernandes’ goal arrived nine minutes from time and removed the remaining uncertainty. United stayed fourth but closed to within three points of second-placed Manchester City, while Tottenham remained in fourteenth place.
