United States finish the group stage unbeaten against Germany

The United States defeated Germany 5–1 to finish first in Olympic men’s hockey group C and second in the overall preliminary ranking. The Americans played patiently against the German defence before increasing their advantage and securing a direct place in the quarter-finals.
Captain Auston Matthews scored twice and provided an assist. Both teams had entered the final preliminary fixture with the opportunity to win the group, making the result significant for the extra recovery day available before the knockout rounds.
Germany finished second in group C and continued through the qualification playoffs. American players described the win as their most complete performance of the tournament so far, while Germany’s Nico Sturm regarded the effort as closer to the standard his team wanted despite the defeat.
