The United States defeated Canada 5–0 to secure first place in Olympic women’s hockey group A. The Americans controlled the contest with speed and sustained attacking pressure, completing the preliminary round with four victories while Canada still had a delayed fixture remaining.

Hannah Bilka scored twice, Abbey Murphy provided three assists and Aerin Frankel made twenty saves for the shutout. Canada competed without captain Marie-Philip Poulin, whose injury removed an important player and leader from the team’s attempt to match the American performance.

The outcome left Canada’s final group position dependent on its rescheduled game against Finland. American players welcomed the confidence gained from defeating their principal rival, while stressing the need to maintain a measured approach as the tournament moved towards the quarter-finals.
