Uruguay captain Belén Barreiro described her team’s preparations for the women’s Hockey World Cup qualifiers as an opportunity to achieve the country’s first appearance at the event. The squad will seek qualification after recent performances that strengthened its confidence in major international competition.

Uruguay finished second at the inaugural Nations Cup Two in 2025 and earned its first Pan American Cup medal during a campaign supported by home crowds. Barreiro said those tournaments had reinforced the importance of concentration and maintaining a shared focus through demanding schedules.

She emphasised retaining Uruguay’s playing identity, trusting its established plan and approaching preparation one day at a time. The interview framed qualification as a possible reward for years of work, while leaving the outcome to the forthcoming tournament rather than presenting a berth as secured.
