Venus Williams accepted a wild card for her first appearance at the Austin tournament, with plans to play singles and doubles. The forty-five-year-old joined the announced field for the WTA 250 event scheduled from 23 February through 1 March at Westwood Country Club.

The former world number one had returned to tour competition in Washington during the previous July. Her early-season schedule included Auckland, Hobart and the Australian Open, where she won a set before losing to Olga Danilovic.

Austin’s announced lineup also featured defending champion Jessica Pegula, Iva Jovic, McCartney Kessler, Ashlyn Krueger and Peyton Stearns. The tournament was one of two opening Sunshine Swing events before the calendar moved to Indian Wells and Miami.
