Real Madrid defeated Benfica 1-0 at Estadio da Luz in the first leg of their Champions League play-off. Vinicius Junior supplied the only goal soon after half-time, giving Alvaro Arbeloa’s side an advantage to take into the return match in Madrid.

Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin kept out several first-half attempts, including efforts from Kylian Mbappe and Arda Guler. Thibaut Courtois also made a significant save at the other end, leaving the teams level when they reached the interval after an intense opening period.

Vinicius broke through with a shot into the top corner in the fiftieth minute. Referee Francois Letexier later stopped play for eight minutes after activating the anti-racism protocol following Vinicius’ report of an insult.
