Vittozzi wins Italy’s first Olympic biathlon gold
Perfect shooting gave the Italian pursuit victory ahead of Kirkeeide and Minkkinen.
Source publication date:
Lisa Vittozzi won Olympic women’s ten-kilometre pursuit in 30:11.8, earning Italy’s first biathlon gold at the Winter Games. Maren Kirkeeide took silver, 28.8 seconds behind, while Finland’s Suvi Minkkinen won bronze after also shooting clean.
Vittozzi entered the last standing stage behind Kirkeeide. The Italian hit all five targets while the Norwegian missed twice, reversing their positions and giving Vittozzi a decisive advantage before the final skiing loop.
Kirkeeide recovered past Minkkinen to claim her second medal in two days after winning sprint gold. Minkkinen’s bronze was Finland’s first women’s Olympic biathlon medal and the country’s first medal in the sport since 1996, completing a podium with two clean-shooting athletes.
