Weissenhaus confirmed for 2027 freestyle worlds
FIDE and Freestyle Chess agreed to return to Germany with separate women’s and open championship weekends.
Source publication date:
FIDE and Freestyle Chess agreed that Weissenhaus will again stage the freestyle world championships in 2027. The women’s tournament is scheduled for the first February weekend, followed by the open championship on the second weekend, each lasting three days.
The agreement follows the inaugural joint championship in 2026, won by Magnus Carlsen ahead of Fabiano Caruana. Both finalists and third-placed Nodirbek Abdusattorov have qualified for the next edition. Bibisara Assaubayeva qualified for the women’s event through the exhibition match.
The organisers said continuity of venue and calendar would support a stable championship cycle. Additional places will come through qualifying events, with the Grenke Freestyle Chess Open in Karlsruhe confirmed as the next step from 2 to 6 April. The title remains within FIDE’s recognised championship framework.
