Weston and Stoecker win first Olympic mixed skeleton title
The British pair finished in 1:59.36 as the new event made its Games debut.
Source publication date:
Matt Weston and Tabitha Stoecker became the first Olympic mixed team skeleton champions in Cortina. Their combined time of 1:59.36 won the newly introduced event, giving Weston a second gold at the same Games after his individual men’s victory two days earlier.
Stoecker put the pair into contention before Weston started the final descent with approximately three tenths to recover on Germany’s Susanne Kreher and Axel Jungk. His rapid reaction and 58.59-second run moved the British team into the lead.
Freya Tarbit and Marcus Wyatt finished fourth, eleven hundredths outside the medals. Tarbit had set the fastest time among the fourteen women, but Germany’s Jacqueline Pfeifer and Christopher Grotheer later took bronze. Stoecker had placed fifth in her individual competition.
