Weston borrow Tommy Backwell from Cheltenham
The midfielder arrives following Charlie Cummins’s recall.
Source publication date:
Weston-super-Mare signed Tommy Backwell on loan from Cheltenham Town to strengthen their midfield. Manager Scott Rogers identified him as a suitable replacement for Charlie Cummins, who had been recalled by Exeter City after his temporary spell with the Seagulls.
Backwell, 22, developed with Mangotsfield United, Southampton and Bristol City. He joined Cheltenham at the start of 2025, initially on loan before the move became permanent, and had made fifteen first-team appearances for the Robins.
He also brought senior non-League experience from Yate Town and Bath City. Rogers highlighted his energy, aggressive midfield work and goal threat, saying the club had followed his progress from Bristol City's under-21 team into Cheltenham's senior squad.
