The British slider beat Axel Jungk by 0.88 seconds in Cortina.
Source publication date:
Matt Weston won the Olympic men’s skeleton title in Cortina, finishing with a combined time of 3:43.33 and a margin of 0.88 seconds over Axel Jungk. The result delivered Great Britain’s first medal of the Milano Cortina Games and its first gold in men’s skeleton.
Weston led from the opening run and set a track record in each of his four descents. A 0.30-second advantage after the first two runs increased through the final day as he improved again rather than simply protecting the lead.
The twenty-eight-year-old entered the Olympics after consecutive world championship victories. He became the third British man to win an individual Winter Olympic gold, following figure skaters John Curry and Robin Cousins.
