Women’s running panel calls for fairer event design
England Athletics shared discussion on childcare, pregnancy policies and equal race recognition.
Source publication date:
England Athletics marked International Women’s Day by publishing a discussion from January’s National Running Show. Dietician Charlie Watson, SheRaces founder Sophie Power and Olympian Jo Pavey examined barriers to participation and the value of community support across different stages of women’s lives.
Power described research involving more than two thousand women and proposed changes for organisers. These included pregnancy deferrals, clear policies, suitable toilets and period products, women’s-fit shirts and equal prizes, coverage and recognition for the two races.
Watson discussed childcare, unlit routes and fatigue as practical obstacles, while Pavey highlighted support through training and parenthood. The panel also considered family-friendly scheduling, safe and inclusive group running, and stronger representation of women in decisions affecting the sport.
