Zhang and Paolini advance to Merida quarterfinals
Defending champion Emma Navarro exited as Zhang Shuai extended her qualifying run.

Zhang Shuai defeated defending champion Emma Navarro 6–4, 6–4 to reach the Merida quarterfinals. The thirty-seven-year-old qualifier recovered from a break down in both sets, extending her run to four consecutive straight-set victories across qualifying and the main draw.
Zhang won five consecutive games from 4–1 down in the opener and five of the last six games in the second set. The result gave her a third win in three tour-level meetings with Navarro and a quarterfinal against Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva.
Jasmine Paolini also advanced, defeating Priscilla Hon 6–0, 6–2 on her tournament debut. The top seed reached her first quarterfinal of the season and set up a meeting with Katie Boulter.
