Zheng returns with twenty aces in Doha
The Chinese player recovered against Sofia Kenin in her first competitive appearance of the season.
Source publication date:
Zheng Qinwen began her season by defeating Sofia Kenin 4–6, 6–1, 6–2 in Doha. The Chinese player delivered twenty aces and forty-three winners during her first tour appearance since the previous autumn, recovering after losing the opening set.
Zheng underwent right-elbow surgery in July 2025 and missed the US Open. An attempted return in China ended with another retirement, and she later withdrew from the Australian Open while continuing her recovery.
Her Doha performance offered a stronger start, with serving power and increasingly patient baseline play helping her control the last two sets. Zheng said her elbow recovery remained a gradual process but welcomed the opportunity to continue rebuilding match rhythm in the next round.
