Biesterbos beats Magnier to win Guangxi stage two
Frits Biesterbos finished off Team Picnic PostNL's lead-out to take his first professional win at the Tour of Guangxi on 14 October.
Frits Biesterbos won the second stage of the Tour of Guangxi on 14 October, beating Paul Magnier in the sprint into Jingxi. The result gave the Team Picnic PostNL rider his first professional victory. His team confirmed the outcome in its dated race report, while independent coverage also identified it as the squad's first WorldTour win of the season.
The stage developed through repeated attempts to establish a breakaway before the main group controlled the race around the day's climb. Team Picnic PostNL said three riders remained ahead at the foot of the climb but were caught towards its summit. Further attacks followed, without preventing the anticipated sprint. The team's riders stayed together late on and delivered Biesterbos onto Magnier's wheel.
Biesterbos timed his final acceleration and bike throw to reverse the opening stage's outcome. The stage victory did not make him the race leader: Magnier retained first place overall after day two, with Biesterbos six seconds behind in the published standings. Those positions describe the situation immediately after this stage and are not the final general classification of the ongoing tour.
