Magnier wins Guangxi's opening stage in Chongzuo
Paul Magnier won the Tour of Guangxi opener on 13 October after Soudal Quick-Step helped bring back the breakaway for a bunch sprint.
Paul Magnier won the opening stage of the Tour of Guangxi in Chongzuo on 13 October, completing the sprint after his Soudal Quick-Step teammates helped control the race. The 149.4-kilometre route started and finished in the city. The French rider's victory was confirmed by both his own squad and Team Picnic PostNL, as well as independent race coverage.
Three riders formed the day's main breakaway, with the sprint teams sharing the work behind. Soudal Quick-Step reported that the escape was brought back inside the last ten kilometres. A further attack kept the chase active close to the finish, but the main group remained positioned for a bunch sprint. Magnier then converted his team's lead-out into the stage win.
The performance continued Magnier's success at the Chinese race after he had won five stages in its previous edition. It also came two days after his Hong Kong victory, according to his team's report. Magnier credited the chase and lead-out from his teammates, while describing the heat and high speed as significant demands during the stage.
