Russia opened their 2000 European men’s handball championship campaign with a 27–26 win over Denmark in Rijeka on 21 January. Denmark led 14–11 at half-time, but Russia turned the match around to take a one-goal victory in Group B.

The competition

Oleg Khodkov, Igor Lavrov and Lev Voronin each scored five goals for Russia. Dmitri Filippov and Oleg Kuleshov added four apiece. Denmark’s top scorer was Nikolaj Jacobsen with six, while Lars Krogh Jeppesen scored five. The match record lists 1,000 spectators.

The wider context

Russia followed the opener with wins over Slovenia, Iceland and Portugal before losing to Sweden in their final group match. They still qualified for the semi-finals and ultimately took silver. Denmark lost their next match against Sweden and finished tenth after the placement round, making the narrow opener an important lost opportunity in their campaign.
