The result
Sweden recorded a second consecutive European men’s handball championship win by defeating Denmark 29–22 in Rijeka on 22 January 2000. The seven-goal victory followed Sweden’s opening win over Iceland and strengthened the defending champions’ position in Group B.
The competition
Stefan Lövgren scored 11 goals, more than a third of Sweden’s total, and Mathias Franzén added seven. Sweden already held a 16–10 lead at half-time. Lars Christiansen and Lars Krogh Jeppesen each scored five goals for Denmark, whose second-half scoring could not close the gap. Sweden converted six of eight seven-metre throws, while Denmark scored all four of theirs.
The wider context
The EHF archive records 1,200 spectators for the Scandinavian meeting. Denmark had also lost their opener, narrowly against Russia, so the result left them without a victory after two matches. Sweden went on to face Portugal the following day and ultimately completed the preliminary round with five wins from five.
