Sweden defeated Portugal 29–21 in Rijeka on 23 January 2000 to make it three wins from their first three matches at the men’s European handball championship. The defending champions finished the opening three days of Group B without dropping a result.
The competition
Sweden led 15–9 at half-time and extended their advantage to eight goals by the finish. Johan Pettersson scored seven goals and Stefan Lövgren six. Mathias Franzén, Staffan Olsson and Magnus Wislander each contributed four. Carlos Resende was Portugal’s leading scorer with six goals. Portugal converted all five of their seven-metre throws; Sweden scored two from four.
The wider context
The official EHF match record lists 1,500 spectators. Sweden’s remaining group fixtures were against Slovenia and Russia, while Portugal still had Russia and Denmark to play. The Swedish result formed part of the unbeaten preliminary-round run that put them into the semi-finals; Portugal ultimately finished seventh after the placement round.
