Sweden defeated Slovenia 26–24 in Zagreb on 25 January 2000 to record their fourth straight win at the European men’s handball championship. Slovenia led 12–11 at half-time, making this Sweden’s closest preliminary-round result to that point.
The competition
Magnus Wislander scored seven goals for Sweden, Stefan Lövgren five and Martin Frändesjö four. Aleš Pajovič led Slovenia with five goals, while Iztok Puc and Roman Pungartnik each added four. Sweden overturned the one-goal half-time deficit and finished two goals clear. Sweden converted both their seven-metre throws, while Slovenia failed to score from either of their two.
The wider context
The EHF match record lists 4,000 spectators. Sweden still had a group match against Russia to play before the semi-final round. Slovenia’s defeat was one of three in a five-match preliminary programme, but they later beat Croatia in the placement match to finish fifth in the final tournament standings.
