France defeated Spain 28–22 in Rijeka on 25 January 2000 in the preliminary round of the European men’s handball championship. The six-goal victory was France’s fourth consecutive win in Group A, after earlier successes against Norway, Ukraine and Germany.
The competition
Patrick Cazal scored eight goals and Jackson Richardson six, together supplying half of France’s total. France led 16–12 at half-time and widened the difference after the interval. Enric Masip scored nine goals for Spain, whose next-best contribution was four from Demetrio Lozano. Spain converted eight of 11 seven-metre throws, compared with France’s one successful attempt.
The wider context
The official EHF record lists 2,000 spectators. Both France and Spain eventually progressed to the semi-finals, but neither reached the final. They met again on 30 January in the bronze-medal match, where Spain reversed the preliminary-round outcome with a 24–23 win. This result remains a separate group fixture in the championship chronology.
