The result

Sweden completed the preliminary round of the 2000 European men’s handball championship with five wins from five after beating Russia 28–25 in Zagreb on 27 January. The result placed Sweden first in Group B and Russia second, with both teams progressing to the semi-finals.

The competition

Russia led 15–14 at half-time. Dmitri Filippov scored ten of Russia’s 25 goals, but Sweden’s broader scoring contribution proved enough to overturn the deficit. Magnus Wislander scored seven for Sweden, Mathias Franzén six and Ljubomir Vranjes five. The official record lists 2,000 spectators.

The wider context

This was Russia’s first defeat after four consecutive group wins. Sweden then faced Spain in the semi-final, while Russia met France. Both won those matches, producing a second Sweden–Russia meeting in the final. The group result therefore preceded a rematch that decided the championship three days later.
