How it unfolded
Oleg Velyky scored 12 of Ukraine’s 24 goals, accounting for half the team’s output. Ruslan Prudius added four. Markus Baur led Germany with eight, Daniel Stephan supplied five and Klaus-Dieter Petersen four. Germany was perfect from the seven-metre line, converting all six throws, while Ukraine scored three from four attempts.
The wider picture
The draw became an important reference point in both teams’ final group records. Germany later collected another draw against Norway but lost its other three preliminary matches. Ukraine lost all four remaining group fixtures, leaving this opening point as its only one. Velyky subsequently finished the tournament as its leading scorer with 46 goals.
