Russia secured a fourth consecutive victory at the Men’s EHF EURO 2000 by beating Portugal 24–20 in Zagreb on 25 January. Portugal led 13–11 at half-time, but Russia won the second half 13–7. How it unfolded
Denis Krivoshlykov and Stanislav Kulinchenko each scored six for Russia, together producing half the winning total. Carlos Resende contributed eight for Portugal, Rui Rocha six and Filipe Cruz three. Russia converted five of six seven-metre throws; Portugal scored once from two attempts. Resende and Rocha combined for 14 of Portugal’s 20 goals.
The wider picture
Russia moved to eight points with one preliminary match remaining, beyond Portugal’s maximum possible six. The final group fixture matched Russia with the also-unbeaten Swedish team. Portugal, which had won its first two matches before losing to Sweden, next faced Denmark. Russia finished second in Group B; Portugal’s final record was two wins and three defeats.
