Russia maintains its winning start with a 25–23 result against Iceland
Russia completed the first three days of the Men’s EHF EURO 2000 with a third successive win, defeating Iceland 25–23 in Rijeka on 23 January. Russia led 15–14 at half-time and added another goal to its advantage after the break. The result kept Russia unbeaten alongside Sweden in Group B.

Russia completed the first three days of the Men’s EHF EURO 2000 with a third successive win, defeating Iceland 25–23 in Rijeka on 23 January. Russia led 15–14 at half-time and added another goal to its advantage after the break. The result kept Russia unbeaten alongside Sweden in Group B.
How it unfolded
Dmitri Filippov led Russia with six goals, Lev Voronin scored five and Eduard Moskalenko four. Iceland’s Valdimar Grímsson also scored six, while Dagur Sigurdsson added five and Gustaf Bjarnason and Patrekur Johannesson four each. Russia converted all four seven-metre throws; Iceland made five of six. The EHF record lists 1,200 spectators.
The wider picture
Russia’s earlier wins had come against Denmark and Slovenia. After the rest day, Russia played Portugal, whereas Iceland faced Denmark. Russia ultimately reached the semi-finals with four victories and one group defeat. Iceland’s three defeats at this stage became five by the end of the preliminary round, leaving the team in the eleventh-place match.
