Slovenia survives Iceland’s second-half comeback to win 27–26
Slovenia completed its Men’s EHF EURO 2000 preliminary round with a 27–26 victory over Iceland in Zagreb on 27 January. A 17–12 half-time lead appeared substantial, but Iceland won the second half 14–10. Slovenia retained only one goal of its opening five-goal advantage, enough to collect a second group victory.

A 17–12 half-time lead appeared substantial, but Iceland won the second half 14–10. Slovenia retained only one goal of its opening five-goal advantage, enough to collect a second group victory.
How it unfolded
Andrej Kastelic and Uroš Šerbec each scored five for Slovenia, with Zoran Lubej adding four. Valdimar Grímsson led Iceland with seven; Patrekur Johannesson and Gudjón Valur Sigurdsson supplied five apiece, and Ólafur Stefánsson four. Slovenia converted six of eight seven-metre throws and Iceland all four of its attempts. The recorded crowd was 2,400.
The wider picture
The result left Slovenia with four points from two wins and third place in Group B. Portugal and Denmark also finished on four points, but occupied the next two places. Slovenia advanced to the fifth-place match against Croatia. Iceland finished sixth after losing all five group matches and next faced Ukraine for eleventh place.
