Aleš Pajovič scored ten goals for Slovenia, with Roman Pungartnik adding four. Russia’s leading scorer was Eduard Koksharov with seven; Oleg Khodkov and Denis Krivoshlykov produced five each. Russia converted three of six seven-metre throws, compared with Slovenia’s one from four. The match record lists 2,500 spectators at the Rijeka venue.

Russia had started with a 27–26 win against Denmark and next faced Iceland. The Russian team subsequently secured a semi-final place with four preliminary victories.
