Spain withstands Ukraine’s second-half response to win 27–24

Spain made it three victories from three preliminary matches at the Men’s EHF EURO 2000 with a 27–24 win over Ukraine in Zagreb on 23 January. A 17–11 first-half advantage proved decisive. Ukraine won the second half 13–10, halving the deficit, but Spain retained enough of its opening lead to secure another two points.

Spain made it three victories from three preliminary matches at the Men’s EHF EURO 2000 with a 27–24 win over Ukraine in Zagreb on 23 January. A 17–11 first-half advantage proved decisive. Ukraine won the second half 13–10, halving the deficit, but Spain retained enough of its opening lead to secure another two points.

How it unfolded

Rafael Guijosa scored seven goals for Spain, Ortega Pérez six and Talant Dujshebaev four. Ukraine’s Oleg Velyky produced ten goals and Vyacheslav Lochman seven, meaning those two players supplied 17 of their team’s 24. Both teams scored twice from seven-metre throws; Spain had three attempts and Ukraine four. The official attendance was 1,000.

The wider picture

Spain’s earlier victories had come against Croatia and Norway. Its next match was the meeting with France on 25 January, when the two unbeaten teams faced one another. Ukraine, still on the single point gained against Germany, next played Croatia. Spain subsequently finished second in Group A and advanced to the semi-finals.
