How it unfolded

Patrick Cazal and Ukraine’s Oleg Velyky each finished with eight goals. Bertrand Gille and Stéphane Joulin added four apiece for France, while Vyacheslav Lochman scored five and Vitaliy Nat four for Ukraine. France converted all three of its seven-metre throws; Ukraine scored once from two attempts. Those successful penalties matched the two-goal difference in the final score.

The wider picture

The fixture came a day after Ukraine’s 24–24 draw against Germany, leaving Ukraine with one point from two matches. France moved on to Germany on 23 January; Ukraine faced Spain.
