Confirmed development

Frederiksberg IF defeated Volgograd AKVA 24-23 in Denmark on 17 February 2001, recovering from a 14-15 half-time deficit. The Danish club outscored the visitors 10-8 after the interval to finish the group phase with a narrow home victory. It was a marked improvement on the reverse fixture in January, which Volgograd had won 30-15, and gave Frederiksberg their first win in the six-match group programme.

Details

Mette Vestergaard supplied ten of Frederiksberg's 24 goals. Kathrine Haugland and Mia Hundvin contributed four each, while Karina Brygmann-Jespersen scored three. Ditte Hjorth, Rikke Horlykke Jorgensen and Christina Krogshede added one apiece. The scoring distribution placed a substantial share of the home attack with Vestergaard, whose total was two more than any visiting player managed.

Context

Marina Lambevska led Volgograd with eight goals and Inna Mokhova added six. Elena Tchaoussova scored three and Olga Nozdrina two, with four other players completing the visitors' 23-goal total. Volgograd's one-goal lead at the break was therefore not enough to secure the return match. Across the two group fixtures, both teams won at home, although the Russian club's earlier victory had come by a much larger margin.
