Confirmed development

France won its second men's Handball World Championship by defeating Sweden 28–25 after extra time in Paris on 4 February 2001. The Bercy final ended normal time at 22–22, with Grégory Anquetil equalising after Stefan Lövgren had put Sweden 22–21 ahead with only 18 seconds remaining. France had led 11–10 at half-time.

Details

The equalising attack began with goalkeeper Bruno Martini's outlet and continued through Bertrand Gille and Joël Abati before Anquetil finished. France then scored six goals to Sweden's three in extra time. Patrick Cazal, returning after an ankle sprain, was part of the French response as the hosts converted the reprieve into the title.

Context

The win followed France's earlier world championship in 1995 and concluded Daniel Costantini's time in charge of the national team. Sweden finished runner-up, while Yugoslavia took bronze by beating Egypt in the separate third-place match. France's winning campaign had also required extra time against Germany in the quarter-finals before the semi-final victory over Egypt.
