Confirmed development

Russia defeated Germany 33–29 in the fifth-to-eighth classification semi-final at Bercy in Paris on 3 February 2001. Eduard Kokcharov scored nine goals, including five penalties, as Russia moved on to play Spain for fifth place. Germany was left to contest seventh against Ukraine rather than returning to the medal competition.

Details

The first half remained close. Germany went ahead through a Stefan Kretzschmar counterattack, and later regained the lead at 7–6 before Russia opened a 13–10 advantage. Germany recovered again, but Oleg Khodkov's goal helped Russia take a 17–16 lead into the interval. The second half produced 16 Russian goals and 13 German goals, derived from the official scores.

Context

Markus Baur led Germany with eight goals, four from penalties, and Kretzschmar added five. The match followed Germany's extra-time quarter-final defeat by France and Russia's quarter-final loss to Egypt. Those earlier eliminations determined why the teams were competing for classification places; this four-goal Russian win then fixed their separate final-day assignments.
