Confirmed development
Yugoslavia defeated Spain 26–24 in Toulouse on 1 February 2001 to reach the men's Handball World Championship semi-finals. The winning side had trailed 3–0 after two early goals from Enric Masip and another from Talant Dujshebaev. It recovered to level at 3–3 and later took a 13–10 advantage into half-time.
Details
Dragan Škrbić finished with six goals and Nedeljko Jovanović supplied five, including three penalties. Spain's leading scorers were Masip and Mateo Garralda with six each. Yugoslavia stretched its advantage to 19–14 in the second half before a Spanish response reduced the gap to one goal near the end, making the final passage considerably closer than the earlier five-goal lead.
Context
The two-goal victory sent Branislav Pokrajac's team into a semi-final against Sweden, which had beaten Ukraine 34–20 in Marseille. Spain instead entered the classification route for places five to eight. The quarter-final was played on Thursday 1 February; the contemporary government report was dated the following day, a distinction retained separately from this archive's modern publication time.
