Amusan and Eppie headline African Championships breakthroughs
Tobi Amusan won a third 100m hurdles crown as Lee Eppie took Botswana’s first men’s 400m title.

The opening phase of the African Athletics Championships in Accra produced national firsts and established champions. Botswana’s Lee Eppie won the men’s 400m in 44.66, becoming his country’s first champion in the event after accelerating past Zimbabwe’s Makanakaishe Charamba Hove in the closing stages.
Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan reclaimed the women’s 100m hurdles title in 12.83 for her third African Championships crown. Ashley Miller and Adaobi Tabugbo completed a Nigerian sweep of the podium.
Cameroon also celebrated both 100m titles through Emmanuel Eseme and Hervérge Kole Etame. These results cover the completed finals reported through 15 May; the championships continued at the University of Ghana Stadium until 17 May.
