Tobias Lund Andresen won the opening road stage of the men’s Tour Down Under in Tanunda, beating Matthew Brennan and Sam Welsford after 120.6 kilometres. The Decathlon CMA CGM rider also moved into the ochre jersey following the bunch sprint.
Samuel Watson, the previous evening’s prologue winner, dropped to second overall but remained only one second behind. Defending champion Jhonatan Narvaez collected three bonus seconds at the first intermediate sprint and finished the day seven seconds off the lead.
The early breakaway included Martin Urianstad Bugge, Guillaume Martin and Enzo Paleni. Bugge emerged with the mountains jersey, while Brennan took the young rider classification, giving the opening road stage consequences beyond the sprint result.
