Antoniou earns Cyprus its first Grand Prix gold
The heavyweight came from behind to defeat Mikita Sviryd in Lima.

Giannis Antoniou won the men’s +100kg title at the Lima Grand Prix, becoming the first judoka from Cyprus to earn Grand Prix gold. He defeated Croatia’s Mikita Sviryd in the heavyweight final.
Antoniou fell behind by a yuko but responded with an ippon to reverse the contest. The win marked a national milestone and the strongest result of his career according to his immediate post-final assessment.
Denis Batchaev defeated Chile’s Francisco Solis for bronze with a ko-soto-gake. Montenegro’s Stefan Kovinic won the other bronze against Serbia’s Vidak Maljevic, maintaining the advantage from a yuko until time expired.
