Basavareddy recovers from 1–7 in qualifying tiebreak
Ofner’s premature celebration preceded an extraordinary Australian Open turnaround.
Source publication date:
Nishesh Basavareddy defeated Sebastian Ofner 4–6, 6–4, 7–6 in the second round of Australian Open qualifying. The American recovered from 1–7 in the deciding match tiebreak after Ofner mistakenly celebrated reaching seven points, although the format required ten.
Basavareddy won eight of the next nine points to create a match point, later saving two himself before converting his second opportunity. The victory continued a new coaching partnership with Gilles Cervara, who had previously guided Daniil Medvedev to world number one.
The result placed Basavareddy into a final qualifying match against George Loffhagen. The same report recorded Nikolai Budkov Kjaer defeating James McCabe in another deciding tiebreak despite emerging cramps, with the Norwegian advancing to face Pierre-Hugues Herbert for a place in the main draw.
