Benfica defeated Real Madrid 4-2 in Lisbon on the final night of the Champions League league phase. Madrid finished ninth and therefore faced a play-off for a round-of-sixteen place after dropping out of the direct qualification positions.
Kylian Mbappé headed Madrid ahead, but Andreas Schjelderup equalised and Vangelis Pavlidis converted a penalty before half-time. Schjelderup scored again after the break, followed by Mbappé’s second goal to keep the visitors within reach.
Raúl Asencio and Rodrygo were both sent off during added time, leaving Madrid with nine players. Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin then headed in from a free-kick in the closing moments, completing the win and helping the Portuguese club secure its own play-off place.
