Timothy Brownell defeated Marwan ElShorbagy 9–11, 11–1, 13–11, 13–11 in the Tournament of Champions first round. The American world number twenty-six overcame a one-game deficit against the seventh-ranked opponent before a supportive home crowd at Grand Central Terminal.

Brownell saved four game balls in the third game and two in the fourth, maintaining his concentration through both extended finishes. The sixty-one-minute victory advanced the United States number one to the second round and provided a prominent opening-day upset in New York.

Other results included Youssef Ibrahim recovering to beat Mohamed Abouelghar and Karim Gawad defeating Aly Abou Eleinen after losing the first game. Reigning women’s champion Hania El Hammamy began her defence with a straight-games victory over Tomato Ho.
