Butcher and Wegman win at the first slalom ranking race
New Zealand sweeps both kayak podiums as Martina Wegman returns after childbirth.

Olympic kayak cross champion Finn Butcher began his 2026 season with men’s kayak victory at the ICF Ranking Race in Mangahao. His 87.03-second performance led a New Zealand podium alongside George Snook and Michel Uhl.
Martina Wegman won the women’s kayak final in 99.26 on her return to competition after the birth of her first child. She finished 0.78 seconds ahead of Rio Olympic silver medallist Luuka Jones, with Holly Sheaff third.
Seventeen-year-old Rosie Rex won women’s canoe in 116.77, ahead of Keira Hodgson and Emily Nagel. Oliver Puchner took the men’s canoe title, continuing his progress after becoming New Zealand’s first individual under-23 world medallist during the previous season.
