Coll overwhelms Pajares to reach New Zealand Open final
The top seed conceded only nine points in a dominant Christchurch semifinal.
Source publication date:
Paul Coll reached the New Zealand Open final with an 11–3, 11–5, 11–1 victory over Iker Pajares. The thirty-seven-minute semifinal continued the top seed’s commanding progress at the Isaac Theatre Royal, where he was pursuing a third consecutive title in his home tournament.
Coll limited the Spanish player to nine points across the three games. He controlled the pace and produced another decisive result after an equally emphatic quarterfinal performance against Eain Yow Ng, preserving his strength for the championship match in Christchurch.
His final opponent was eighteen-year-old Mohamad Zakaria, who had survived a much longer semifinal against Joel Makin. The contrasting routes left Coll with a straight-games win before the decider while the Egyptian advanced after the longest match of the season to that point.
