Coll wins Australian Open after ninety-minute three-game final

Paul Coll won his second Australian Open title by defeating Joel Makin 3–0 in a ninety-minute final. The New Zealand world number two prevailed 19–17, 11–4, 14–12 at Brisbane’s South Bank Piazza, with the straight-games score concealing two fiercely contested tiebreaks.
The first game alone lasted forty-four minutes. Makin led 10–7, but Coll saved seven game balls across the extended contest before taking the opener. The Welshman had spent 107 minutes winning his semifinal against Mohamad Zakaria, yet still challenged throughout the championship match.
Coll won the second more comfortably and led 10–6 in the third before Makin saved four championship balls. Makin then had two game-ball opportunities of his own. Coll eventually closed the final at 14–12, praising his opponent’s physical preparation and professionalism after the battle.
