Source publication date:
Paul Coll won his third consecutive New Zealand Open title by beating Mohamad Zakaria 11–7, 11–2, 11–5. The thirty-eight-minute final at Christchurch’s Isaac Theatre Royal delivered the New Zealander’s thirty-first PSA title and completed another successful appearance before his home crowd.
Zakaria entered the final after a 125-minute semifinal against Joel Makin the previous day. Coll took a seventeen-minute opening game and then accelerated, building an 8–0 lead in the second to put the Egyptian under increasing pressure in the championship match.
The top seed maintained control in the third game and closed the contest without dropping a game. His victory followed emphatic earlier-round performances at the Silver tournament, while the eighteen-year-old Zakaria finished runner-up after an exceptionally demanding route through the men’s draw.
