Daniela Caram profile highlights Chile's inclusive hockey pathway
The former international explained how Hockey ID developed through families, volunteers and regular training.
Source publication date:
Former Chile international Daniela Caram described her work expanding hockey opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities in an FIH profile. She helped launch Hockey ID in Chile in 2019 after identifying limited sporting options for potential participants and their families.
The initiative began with demonstrations at festivals before developing into regular sessions supported by athletes and volunteers. Caram said trust from families and personal recommendations helped the programme grow, despite disruption and practical challenges during the pandemic.
Chile's Hockey ID team subsequently participated in the Special Olympics World Games and Latin American Games. Caram, a PAHF representative on the gender equality, diversity and inclusion committee, encouraged federations to begin with practical steps and involve families when creating more accessible hockey programmes.
