De Minaur recovers to defeat Medjedovic
The Australian overcame a lost opening set and a rain interruption.
Source publication date:
Alex de Minaur defeated Hamad Medjedovic 6–7(5), 6–2, 6–2, 6–1 in the Australian Open second round. The sixth-ranked Australian recovered from a difficult opening set at Rod Laver Arena as the Serbian’s power initially prevented him from establishing control.
De Minaur did not break serve during the first seventeen games. Once he converted a chance at 3–2 in the second set, he broke in six of Medjedovic’s next eight service games and maintained momentum despite a thirty-minute rain delay between the second and third sets.
The victory brought De Minaur into the Melbourne third round for the seventh consecutive time. He credited patience and the ability to sustain his level as the match developed. American twenty-ninth seed Frances Tiafoe awaited after a four-set victory over Francisco Comesana.
