Source publication date:
The IJF profiled Tsegaye Degineh following his appointment to its Judo for Peace Commission. The founding president of Ethiopia’s judo and ju-jitsu association leads much of the federation’s work from Germany while maintaining close involvement in Ethiopian decisions and development.
Degineh helped establish twelve clubs with Johannes and Regina Daxbacher after judo training initiatives began in Ethiopia in 2010. The country joined the IJF in 2011, when two Ethiopian athletes also competed at the world championships.
His voluntary activity has received recognition in both countries, including Germany’s Federal Cross of Merit in 2021. The new commission role extends his emphasis on dialogue and values education, building on relationships with judo leaders across the African continent.
