Novak Djokovic defeated Francesco Maestrelli 6–3, 6–2, 6–2 in the Australian Open second round. The fourth seed advanced to the tournament’s third round for the eighteenth time in twenty-one appearances and recorded his 101st singles victory at Melbourne Park.

Maestrelli’s fastest serve reached 221 kilometres per hour, but Djokovic’s returns and baseline construction repeatedly created opportunities. The qualifier briefly became the first player to break Djokovic in the tournament before the Serbian immediately responded to finish the match in straight sets.

Djokovic extended his undefeated record against qualifiers at Grand Slams to thirty-two matches. He said the off-season work was producing benefits despite a lack of recent competitive appearances. Botic van de Zandschulp awaited in a third-round contest carrying further match-win milestones for the veteran.
