Djokovic advances after Musetti retires with two-set lead
An injury ended the Italian’s quarterfinal challenge at Rod Laver Arena.
Source publication date:
Novak Djokovic reached the Australian Open semifinals after Lorenzo Musetti retired while leading 6–4, 6–3, 1–3. The fifth-seeded Italian could no longer continue because of pain associated with a possible right iliopsoas or adductor injury during the quarterfinal.
Musetti had used his defensive variety to draw thirty-two unforced errors from Djokovic. He later said he first sensed a problem during the second set but continued because he was playing well. The match ended after two hours and eight minutes.
Djokovic acknowledged that Musetti had been the stronger player and wished him a rapid recovery. The result gave the Serbian a record 103rd Melbourne match victory and his fifty-fourth major semifinal overall, with his next opponent to emerge from Jannik Sinner’s match against Ben Shelton.
