Portugal defeated Romania 40–34 in Herning to start their European Championship group B campaign with a national scoring record. Their forty goals were the most Portugal had scored in one EHF EURO match, while Romania conceded that total for the first time at the tournament.

Portugal took command after Romania’s early lead and reached half-time ahead 23–15. Francisco Costa scored five first-half goals, and ten other Portuguese players also scored before the break as the team converted chances efficiently.

Romania remained active after the interval, led by Daniel Stanciuc’s eight goals, but could not overturn the deficit. Francisco Costa finished with nine and Martim Costa added seven; Francisco received the player-of-the-match award for the opening victory.
