Janc’s ten goals drive Slovenia’s first main-round victory
Slovenia and Hungary finished 35–32 in Malmö.
Source publication date:
Slovenia defeated Hungary 35–32 in Malmö to collect their first European Championship main-round victory and reach four points. Hungary remained on one after Slovenia ended an eight-year wait for a victory over them across competitions and a fourteen-year wait at this tournament.
Hungary’s seven-against-six attack established a 17–15 half-time lead. Slovenia improved defensively after the restart and scored three unanswered goals, moving ahead 18–17 before maintaining the advantage through a second half in which Hungary repeatedly threatened to equalise.
Captain Blaž Janc scored ten from twelve attempts and received the match award. Hungary’s Bence Imre converted all eight shots, but Staš Jovičič’s goal with twenty-six seconds remaining finally settled the result for Slovenia.
